Why Grass-Fed Broth?
Unless specified otherwise, it’s almost certain that the meat in your local grocery store is derived from conventional farming. However, you’re doing your body and health no favors by regularly eating low-grade meat.
What’s wrong with conventional meat? It has to do with how livestock is raised from birth until the point they’re hauled to the butcher’s block. Chicken and cattle are stressed 24/7 by being confined like sardines into stalls without even the luxury of leg room.
Studies show that stressed cattle produce less tender and flavorful meat. Stress also impacts immune health; in turn, this leaves the animals more susceptible to infections. It’s reasonable to assume this may have an impact on the meat’s nutritional content.
Aside from cramped living conditions, livestock are also given artificial growth hormones to induce an unnatural growth rate. Furthermore, growth hormones are also added in cattle and chicken feed. Zeranol is one common hormone given to cattle. In a study reported by CBS News, researchers mixed zeranol-treated meat with malignant breast cancer cells. The results? The cells grew and multiplied at a rapid rate!
That’s not all. In another study, adolescent girls with elevated levels of zeranol in their body were shorter on average and also exhibited slower rates of breast development compared to peers.

We must stress, however, that organic bone broth does not necessarily equal a grass-fed source. If the meat and/or bone is just listed as organic, that means the cattle was raised in a sanitary condition with more free-roaming space. This is certainly a plus; however, the livestock may still be given a grain-based diet. The opposite may also be true. Grass-fed cattle typically have free roaming space, but not always.
To be absolutely certain you’re getting the best quality meat and bones, be sure the label reads “organic” and “grass-fed.” If it only reads one or the other, contact the supplier to confirm. Another label to look for is “100 percent grass-fed,” which indicates the cattle is allowed to freely roam and graze for its own food.
You can have the best of both worlds and enjoy organic bone broth and grass-fed bone broth. The best-quality meat is grass-fed cattle raised on organic pastures their entire lives.
How to Choose High-Quality Broth
If making your own broth, use 100 percent grass-fed meat and bones. It’s a little trickier if you buy pre-packaged broth. The presence of a certified USDA Organic label is not enough. Read our guide on how to choose the highest-quality bone broth product.
Does the package disclose the source as grass-fed meat? The packaging doesn’t always provide clear-cut information on the origins of the ingredients. When in doubt, shoot an email or phone the manufacturer.
The same goes for bone broth and collagen supplements. Be certain the label contains the words “organic” and “grass-fed” or “100 percent grass-fed.”
