Does Sex Increase Testosterone? The Impact of Intercourse on Male Hormones

As it turns out, sex does appear to increase male testosterone. This isn’t a new revelation by any means. In 1970, a study suggested that sexual activity may actually stimulate beard growth. Furthermore, additional supportive research1 shows that both testosterone and dihydrotestosterone may influence facial hair growth. Obviously, this alone is not bulletproof evidence that sex causes a testosterone surge. However, it did get the ball rolling for similar studies that followed.

Various studies that ensued showed that testosterone levels were higher after intercourse than during rest. Interestingly enough, testosterone is also a necessary component in sperm production. Sex increases testosterone, and testosterone increases sperm, which increases sexual arousal.

Research also suggests sexual arousal alone may be enough to stimulate testosterone increase. In a study, men that attended a sex club saw a 11 percent jump in their testosterone levels even though the men did not have sexual intercourse or masturbate.

The same study also included subjects that did engage in intercourse with a woman. Their testosterone skyrocketed by 72 percent.

What About Masturbation?

Does sex increase testosterone? Yes, that much is clear according to evidence and even anecdotal accounts of men reporting feelings of more vigor and vitality. What about single men that rely on masturbation and pornography to satisfy their sexual needs? Does masturbation have the same testosterone-boosting effects? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Self-ejaculation does not appear to have any noticeable effects on male serum T-levels, according to studies. One other study2, in fact, showed that refraining from masturbation for seven days may even lead to a mild testosterone increase.

Does too Much Sex Deplete Testosterone?

There have been concerns among some  that too much sex or masturbation may cause a dip in testosterone. The belief is that with each ejaculation, you empty your testes of its sperm and some testosterone in the process. It’s true that there is a small decrease after sexual activity, though the amount loss is negligible and quickly replenished. The same goes for the body’s reserve of minerals and nutrients (e.g. zinc, magnesium) used to produce testosterone.

How Does Sex Increase Testosterone?

What exactly takes place at the anatomical level during sexual activity? Orgasms cause an increase in serotonin and nitric oxide, which aid in the contractions in the pelvic and penile region. NO also stimulates gonadotrophin secretion, which is essential in T production. Furthermore, nitric oxide also inhibits the stress hormone cortisol. Sexual arousal also sends blood rushing to your penis, causing the sudden hardness and stiffening. More blood means more nutrient transport to the male genitals, which enables more testosterone production and sperm motility.
