The market of testosterone-boosting dietary enhancements can be kind of hit-or-miss, with terribly-designed ‘t-booster’ blends dominating Amazon that don’t deliver yet somehow overshadow other helpful herbs and minerals that can amp up your T levels.
So how do you know which testosterone supplements to try?

In a world dominated by fancy protein supplements and supposed “wonder pills”, Panax ginseng may appear pretty underwhelming. After all, it’s just a muddy-looking root.
But the truth is, this herb has some pretty spectacular health benefits, specifically when it comes to male health.
Having been used for centuries in Asia, and in more recent times to add a punch to energy drinks, Panax ginseng is somewhat of a kick-ass herb that’s been studied extensively for its benefits.
So What Is Panax Ginseng Exactly?
Ginseng is a pretty varied group of herbs that isn’t even all the same plant genus. Actually, the term “ginseng” refers to around five completely different plant species that are generally beneficial for human health .
The five major types of ginseng as found at your nearby Whole Foods or whatever health store you frequent are as follows:
- American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)
- Indian Ginseng (Withania somnifera)
- Brazilian Ginseng (Pfaffia paniculata)
- Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
- Red Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
Of these varieties, both herbs in the Panax genus, that is American Ginseng and Red Korean Ginseng, have been investigated for their sexual health benefits. The other forms of ginseng are antioxidants, metabolic regulators, and/or exhibit advantageous effects on neurocognition .
The focus of this writing is Panax ginseng (a.k.a. natural red Korean Ginseng, a.k.a. the OG Ginseng).
Panax ginseng is indigenous to Asian forests in northern Korea and northern China. Due to great demand, ginseng, while originally plentiful, has been depleted and is now a rare herbal commodity .
Ginseng is often regarded as a general health panacea, thanks to its active molecular ingredients, known as ginsenosides, which demonstrate various health benefits.
How Is Panax Ginseng Helpful?
So why should you even care about this weird root?
Animal research has resulted in several conclusions regarding the use of the ginseng root for the enhancement of sexual health and libido.
Not only does ginseng promote general copulatory well-being, but it also has been shown to help treat infertility in men as well as increase sperm count.
Panax ginseng is most well-noted for the fact that it helps combat erectile dysfunction. This makes sense, as ginseng helps release nitric oxide (NO) into the bloodstream.
Nitric oxide is a known erectile enhancer, and is vital for male health. Released nitric oxide relaxes smooth muscle and allows for more blood circulation down in your nether regions.
Simply having an erection boosts your testosterone levels, so ginseng is a double-whammy on the male sexual health front.
Panax ginseng, in the right doses can even increase serum testosterone levels by significant amounts. Not only do T levels increase, but follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels are also increased. LH is the hormone that regulates testosterone production in the testes, so by its increase, testosterone levels are raised as well .
Other health benefits of Panax ginseng are plenty. Not only is it an antioxidant, but it also is known to prevent post-workout muscular damage, as well as improve sleep quality . Panax ginseng is also said to aid in fat loss, by acting thermogenically in your body to metabolize fatty tissue .
Ginseng is also somewhat of a natural DHT blocker, so if you are concerned about DHT-related issues, this might be a plus (the verdict is not yet out on whether or not DHT is the primary cause of hair loss in men, so a DHT blocker isn’t necessarily going to protect your hairline) .

The following recipe for “Sex Muffins” originally found on sacredearth.com, incorporates Panax ginseng powder into an everyday snack:
Sex Muffin Chocolate Recipe
1 ¾ cups all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. ginseng powder (equal to contents of 15 capsules)
2 ounces semisweet chocolate
4 tbsp. butter (1/2 stick)
1/3 cup honey (liquid works best)
1 cup milk
2 egg whites, slightly beaten
6 ounces mini chocolate chips or raisins (optional)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix flour, baking powder, spices and ginseng powder in bowl. Meanwhile, slowly melt chocolate and butter in top of double boiler until smooth. Add melted chocolate to dry ingredients. Add honey, milk and egg whites and stir just enough to blend. Pour into greased muffin tins and bake for 20 – 25 minutes. Cool two minutes before removing from pan .
Due to its rarity, you should ensure that you are buying your ginseng from an established supplier, and not from some black market seller who could be selling you literally anything.
While ginseng certainly has its fair share of health benefits, it can unfortunately interact poorly with blood-thinners, blood sugar medication, NSAIDs, warfarin, and other drugs, so be warned.
The proper dosage of Panax ginseng is somewhere between 200 to 400 milligram/day range for most healthy adults. Confer with your doctor to make sure that ginseng supplementation is right for you.
